AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, is the work of making content clear and verifiable enough that AI services choose to cite it when someone asks a question you could have answered. The difference from SEO lies in what you are competing for. SEO wins a place in a list the user chooses from. AEO wins a place inside a finished answer the user often accepts without seeing any list at all.
Try it tonight. Ask ChatGPT, Copilot or Gemini about something your company solves for customers. Not the company name, just the problem. For most Norwegian organisations the answer lands somewhere between "nobody" and "a competitor I did not know was bigger than us".
Some also use the term GEO, Generative Engine Optimization, as a broader umbrella for how a brand appears across all AI surfaces. In practice the disciplines overlap so much that few need three separate strategies. They need one body of content work clear enough to work in all three.
Why this is no longer a theoretical discussion
Two years ago this was a conversation for the especially interested. Three things have changed that, and all three happened in Norway over the past year.
Google rolled out AI Overviews in Norway from May 2025, the AI-generated summaries that now sit at the top of most search results. October brought AI Mode, a conversational search tab Google itself says will replace the list of links for complex questions. A Semrush analysis reported by Solid Media found that only 35 per cent of the URLs appearing in AI Mode were also on Google's classic first page. A good Google ranking is no longer any guarantee of AI visibility. These are two partly different competitions.
Norway also tops Europe on AI use. Eurostat figures reported by NRK in May 2026 show that 56 per cent of the population has used artificial intelligence in the past three months. Norwegian consumers and buyers are already asking a language model about things they used to google.
And it affects clicks, not only attention. In 2025 the Pew Research Center followed the browsing behaviour of 900 American users across 68,879 real Google searches. When an AI summary is shown, the user clicks through to a traditional link in 8 per cent of cases. Without a summary the figure is 15 per cent, almost double. Only 1 per cent clicked one of the sources the AI itself pointed to.
Google has publicly disputed parts of the methodology. Several independent analyses nonetheless point the same way. Ahrefs found in February 2026 that clicks to the top-ranked page fell by 58 per cent when an AI summary was present, up from 34.5 per cent in their own measurement ten months earlier. Seer Interactive, tracking 42 client organisations, measured a 61 per cent drop in organic click-through rate.
Then comes the number that matters most. In a follow-up in April 2026, Seer found that brands actually cited in the AI answers received 120 per cent more organic clicks per impression than those that were not.
Being cited is not a consolation prize for the click you did not get. It is an advantage in its own right.
One caveat belongs here, because it says something about how careful you should be with predictions in this field. In 2024 Gartner estimated that traditional search volume would fall 25 per cent by 2026. When the deadline arrived, the decline had not materialised on that scale, as Search Engine Journal among others has pointed out. The direction was right. The speed was overestimated. Read this kind of figure as a trend, not as a clock to set your watch by.

What decides whether the AI picks you
The models do not choose at random. They look for sources it is easy to lift precise claims from. In practice that means five things.
The answer has to come early and stand alone. An article that spends three paragraphs getting to the point is hard to cite precisely. Good AEO writing says what the answer is in the first or second sentence, and uses the rest to support it.
Every section has to stand on its own feet. Traditional SEO writing builds an argument across a whole article. The models often lift a single paragraph without the surrounding context. If the paragraph makes no sense alone, it does not get cited. Or worse: it gets cited wrongly.
Structured data helps the machine understand what it is reading. FAQ schema, organisation schema and proper HTML structure with real H2 and H3 headings, not just bold text, make it easier for both Google and language models to tell a question from an answer.
E-E-A-T matters more, not less. Google has confirmed that AI Mode weights sources that appear experienced, competent and trustworthy. An article with no visible author, no professional grounding and no references for where the figures came from is a weaker candidate for citation, however accurate it happens to be.
Your own data beats rewritten information. The models prefer sources with something original to contribute: your own research, your own case figures, your own experience. That beats another rewrite of what everyone else has already published.
The last point is the one I have most faith in, and it is also the hardest to copy. At NATO it was never the generic material that broke through. It was the material nobody else could have made.
How to check whether you are already visible
The simplest test needs no tools. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot about what your company delivers, phrased the way a customer would ask. Not "what is [company name]", but "who can help me with X in [city or region]". Repeat over a few weeks and note who gets mentioned, and how they are described.
For a more systematic view there are tools that track brand visibility across AI platforms over time, among them the Norwegian-built service Periscopify. The point is the same whichever method you use. You are measuring something that did not exist as a management metric three years ago, and few of your competitors are measuring it yet.
Where to start
AEO is not a project you finish and put down. It is an extension of the content work you are hopefully already doing, with a few adjustments.
Go through the pages that already answer specific customer questions, and check whether the answer actually sits clearly at the top. Add FAQ sections where they fit naturally, using real questions customers ask rather than invented ones. Make sure articles have a visible author with genuine professional background.
And publish something that is your own: a study, a concrete result, an experience nobody else can write because nobody else did the work. That is probably what matters most over time. The models cite what is worth citing, and rewritten information rarely is.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO the same as SEO?
No. SEO optimises for a ranked place in a results list. AEO optimises for being cited directly inside an AI-generated answer. Good SEO is still a solid foundation for AEO, but the two are measured differently and call for partly different moves.
Do we have to choose between SEO and AEO?
No, and few should. Content that is clearly structured, well supported and honestly sourced usually performs well on both at once.
How do we know whether it is working?
Track actual AI answers over time, either manually or with a tracking tool, and see whether and how you are mentioned. Clicks and rankings no longer tell the whole story on their own.
How long before we see an effect?
Count in months, not weeks. The models draw on content that has been up, been updated and been linked to over time. It is the same dynamic as in classic SEO, and it cannot be rushed.
